Serbian Slovenian artist Nikola Dimitrovic (b. 1990, Belgrade) works across a range of media including painting, drawing, installation and video art. His practice focuses on challenging power structures, social rituals, politics of representation and the relationship between individual experience and collective systems, often bringing together critical inquiry, humor and a personal perspective.
Rather than illustrating theoretical positions, his works typically emerge from direct encounters, personal observations and everyday situations, allowing broader social and political questions to unfold through the work itself.
In addition to figurative paintings and objects, Nikola has simultaneously worked in experimental film, performance and happenings, involving crowds in urban spaces, sometimes blurring the boundaries of directing and spontaneous action.
Dimitrovic received an MA in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 2019, having already maintained an active exhibition practice for several years. Upon graduation he continued presenting work in group and solo exhibitions, festivals and biennials across Europe. In 2019 he curated the three-month group exhibition Trilogy: Time, Space, Identity, bringing together fifteen artists across three thematic chapters.
He won the award for Best film in the selection of experimental film at the Martovski festival in Belgrade in 2024, and in the same year participated in the 60th October Salon where he presented his multi-channel video installation. The following year he participated in the OFF-Biennale Budapest with the Slovenian collective ETC. and began presenting work at international art fairs including Parallel Vienna.
In 2026 he undertook an independent month-long residency in Istanbul and in the same year in Vienna as part of the Common Ground Vienna residency. His works are part of museum collections in Belgrade.
Nikola is represented by X-Vitamin Gallery from Belgrade and is currently living and working between Belgrade and Istanbul.
